Smart lighting pole


In collaboration with UAB “MODERNIOS E–TECHNOLOGIJOS” (MED), a prototype of an autonomous multifunctional lighting pole was developed. The project description is available on the MED website. UAB “Kompiuterinis procesų valdymas” was responsible for developing the electronic components of the project.

The system includes advanced energy storage, distribution, control, communication, and software components.

Energy Storage
Optimal batteries were selected by evaluating capacity, cycle life, operating temperature, and cost. The possibility of integrating supercapacitors for handling instantaneous loads was analyzed. Advanced lithium-titanate (LTO) batteries—known for fast charging and long lifespan—were also tested.

MPPT Converters
Dual solar channel energy converters were developed using Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms, combined with intelligent charging and monitoring control.

Power Supply
Programmable output channels (5–48 V) were implemented to support lighting, connected devices, and wireless charging. Power management is based on remaining energy prioritization.

Connectivity and Networking
LoRaWAN technology enables communication between poles even without internet access. One pole with TCP/IP connectivity functions as a LoRaWAN gateway. Device connections are supported via USB, RS485, SPI, and Bluetooth interfaces.

Firmware
A core firmware was developed to manage all device modules and support all interfaces. A secure update mechanism was implemented, allowing remote deployment of modified firmware versions while preserving the core bootloader code.

Testing and Certification
The pole was tested under extreme temperatures, shading, and humidity. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electrical safety certifications were also completed.

The result is a sustainable, intelligent, and fully autonomous lighting solution suitable for both urban and remote environments.
